Victory for migrant carers

The rights of an estimated 10,000 migrant care workers to remain in Britain have been protected after a “change of heart” by ministers over new immigration rules, union leaders claimed on Tuesday.

The deportation of large numbers of workers would have thrown the care home sector into crisis, said Unison, the largest public sector union. Under the new rules senior care workers would have been unable to renew their work permits if they had failed to meet tough new skills criteria and were paid less than the Home Office determined going rate for the job, it said.
