A contentious multi-billion pound part-privatisation of the coastguard will move ahead next month, when officials start a "competitive dialogue" with four consortia bidding for the contract.
The 20- to 30-year deal, outsourcing coastal search and rescue operations, is one of the biggest private finance initiatives in the UK. The contract includes the provision of helicopters and the maintenance of equipment at 12 coastguard bases around the country.
