Shares in Singapore’s leading banks enjoyed some of the region’s biggest gains on Wednesday as encouraging quarterly figures added to hopes that the world’s banking system might not need as much capital as forecast.

The Straits Times index closed 5.1 per cent higher at a seven-month high of 2,179.03, taking its rise over the past four sessions to 14 per cent.
