Business launched a ferocious attack on the Treasury on Tuesday, accusing the department of delaying crucial decisions, failing to consult and drawing up tax policies “on the back of a fag packet”.

The CBI employers’ organisation warned that “much-needed calmness, stability and leadership” was needed to get the Treasury’s “relationship with business back on track” after a damaging few months.
