Iraqi politicians pave way for elections

Iraqi lawmakers on Sunday night passed a long-delayed election law, paving the way for elections early next year and averting a constitutional crisis that threatened to delay the withdrawal of US troops.

The national election, due to be held in January, is seen as a crucial test for Iraq as it emerges from the sectarian carnage that followed the US invasion in 2003.
