The European patent office on Wednesday upheld a US biotechnology company’s rights over a diagnostic test for cancer in a case that has sparked widespread international concern over pricing, privacy and scientific progress.

Myriad Genetics, based in Utah, won its appeal which reinstates its original landmark 2001 patent on one of the first genetic tests for detecting breast and ovarian cancer.
