Fed bans unauthorised overdraft charges

Banks will be barred from charging fees when consumers go in to their overdrafts by withdrawing cash or using a debit card, under rules announced by the Federal Reserve on Thursday.

Consumer groups have complained about banks charging customers a “service” fee for unauthorised overdrafts. Analysts say the financial services industry is increasingly reliant on the charges to generate profits.
