As Barack Obama was hitting the campaign trail during the summer, he pledged to engage in efforts to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from the minute he was sworn into office.

Any hopes that he would be able to ease himself into the complex process have been dashed by Israel's bombardment of Gaza.
