Iran puts block on Facebook as election looms

Iran has blocked access to Facebook after thousands of young supporters of MirHossein Moussavi, a leading presidential hopeful, began using the social networking internet site to promote his campaign.

Although it is not unusual for Iranian authorities to filter political, social and sexual websites they deem anti-revolutionary or immoral, the ban on Facebook comes at a sensitive time when reformists complain about having limited access to official media.
