Doubters assent to details of debt relief plan

The international community reached a deal at the weekend on the details of debt relief on money owed to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the African Development Bank.

An agreement had been in doubt as the Netherlands, Nordic countries and other smaller European states complained that the debt relief proposals from the Group of Eight leading economies failed to provide sufficient guarantees of additional finance for international financial institutions.
