Sprint losses widen as subscribers fall

Sprint Nextel, the struggling third-largest US mobile network operator, lost more than 1m subscribers in the first quarter and forecast only marginal improvements in the current quarter.

The company, which has been struggling with merger integration and other issues since Sprint acquired Nextel Communications for $36bn in 2005, lost 1.07m contract customers last quarter, compared with the net 1.2m who quit in the whole of 2007.
