Sunni and Shia politicians in Iraq took several steps towards reconciliation at the weekend, when they passed a law in parliament that would rehabilitate purged members of the former ruling Ba’ath party and signed a pact making common cause against the Kurdish bloc.

US President George W. Bush, speaking on Sunday in Bahrain, hailed the law as an “important step towards reconciliation”.
