Australian consumers growing gloomier

Australian consumer confidence recorded its sharpest quarterly decline in at least 23 years as higher interest rates and a weaker equity market combined with the threat of a US recession to undermine sentiment.

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute index of consumer sentiment dropped 9.1 per cent in March for a three-month slide of 23.3 per cent, the worst quarter since the index began in 1975.
