Three weeks of war in the Gaza Strip have left Ehud Barak in a strangely frustrating position.

Since the conflict started, the defence minister and leader of the Labour party has seen his personal poll ratings soar. He is judged by the overwhelming majority of Israelis to have done an outstanding job in leading the assault, and is now reaping most of the credit for a campaign that remains broadly popular.
