The Latvian government will slash public spending next year to secure a rescue package from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union.

The cabinet agreed late on Tuesday evening to reduce spending by 700m lats ($1.3bn, €1bn, £870m), partly through cuts in the public sector wage bill, and to raise tax revenues by 300m lats through increases in value added and excise taxes.
