Slim victory fuels calls for democratic reform

Labour's victory with the lowest share of the vote in modern parliamentary history raises “serious questions for the quality of democracy”, Charles Kennedy said.

Tony Blair secured a majority of 66 after Labour won only 36 per cent of the vote on a 61 per cent turnout, casting doubt on the legitimacy of his mandate and fuelling demands for electoral reform.
