Insurers must pick up bill for asbestos claims, court rules

Industrial companies facing thousands of compensation claims brought by employees exposed to asbestos decades ago yesterday welcomed a court ruling confirming their insurers must pick up the multi-million-pound bill.

The closely watched case pitted insolvent insurance companies against sufferers of a deadly asbestos-related cancer, who were forced to battle through the courts after an appeals panel altered the market's practice on the payment of "mesothelioma'' claims.
