The International Monetary Fund announced an outline $16.5bn (€13bn) loan agreement on Sunday with Ukraine, which is struggling to restore confidence in a shaky banking system and a sliding currency damaged by the global financial crisis.

The loan, which has yet to be approved by the IMF’s executive board, comes amid negotiations between the fund and a string of other countries suffering from the spreading impact of the credit crisis, including Iceland, Hungary and Pakistan.
