US official urges Asia to improve port security

Asian nations need to upgrade port security in an effort to prevent a terrorist incident that could wreck the global maritime trading system, Michael Chertoff, head of US Homeland Security, said on Tuesday.

Mr Chertoff told reporters in Tokyo that he was seeking to persuade ports, including in Japan and China, to install radiation detectors to help stop radioactive material being smuggled into the US.
