High court hands tech firms patent victory

The US Supreme Court on Monday attacked America’s glut of poor-quality patents by writing new rules that would make it harder to obtain and defend patents.

Ruling unanimously in a case that could affect billions of dollars worth of US patents, the court set a higher threshold for obtaining patent protection and sent a clear signal that it feels excessive patent rights are stifling US innovation.
