Alltel-Western Wireless to create fifth largest player

Alltel, the regional US wireless network operator, has agreed to buy Western Wireless in a cash and stock transaction valued at about $4.3bn and will assume $1.5bn in debt.

The deal will create the fifth largest wireless provider with about 10m customers about 6 per cent of the US market in 33 states and annual revenues of about $10bn.
