‘Economic war’ jolts Focus into fight for survival

The back office of Woking’s new Focus DIY store felt a bit like a military bunker last week. “This is an economic war we’re in,” said Bill Grimsey, chief executive, as its management team gathered to discuss its strategy. “To survive wars you have to behave by discipline and routine.”

Mr Grimsey was brought to the ailing chain in 2007 by Cerberus, the US private equity group . Within a year, their plans to turn the company round had turned into a fight for its survival.
