Overview: Modest rally tempered by long-term concerns

Global equities enjoyed a moderate end-of-year rally on Tuesday, but the mood was tempered by persistent concerns about the outlook for the global economy.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 ended its last session of 2008 with a gain of 1.3 per cent, although its 41.8 per cent annual decline was the worst on record.
