Global overview: Equities rise on rate hopes

Mounting expectations of an imminent cut in US interest rates offered support to global equities this week and drove the dollar to a record low against the euro.

But the mood in the markets remained extremely nervous as investors faced up to signs of worsening conditions in the US housing market, fresh evidence of the impact of the subprime crisis on lenders and record high oil prices.
