Phelps Dodge: Hedges planted out of season

Phelps Dodge took out some insurance last year as it embarked on ambitious plans to expand its operations on three continents.

The Arizona-based company, which is the world’s number-two copper producer, decided to hedge a portion of its sales as a way of ensuring that it would have no trouble financing a growing list of projects, even if the fizz went out of metal markets.
