A wave of ethnic and religious violence driven by short term political ambitions was threatening the unity of the Indian state, Manmohan Singh, India’s prime minister, warned on Monday.
Mr Singh said the world’s largest democracy was facing a violent assault on a “composite culture” that had held together for centuries as regional and general elections neared. He said narrow partisan ends were putting India’s pluralism, democracy and economic development under threat.
