Private sector alarmed at cuts to NHS work

The scale of the private sector’s planned involvement in the National Health Service appeared to be shrinking on Tuesday, with the expected scrapping of a clutch of contracts to buy surgical treatment centres and diagnostic services.

While other deals look set to get the go-ahead from Alan Johnson, the health secretary, a programme originally meant to provide contracts worth £700m a year now seems likely to be more than halved.
