US equities are suffering a cruel summer. The fall is yet to come.

June was the worst month since September 2002, with the S&P 500 down 7 per cent. Almost a third of that drop occurred in the rout that closed last week’s trading, as financial stocks lurched downwards again. The gathering chorus of “the worst is behind us” has suddenly gone quiet.
