Wall St slides despite Fed liquidity plan

US financial stocks on Tuesday fell to their lowest level in 11 years after another afternoon sell-off pushed the S&P 500 below 1,000 for the first time in five years, in spite of the prospect of lower interest rates.

The retreat came even after the Federal Reserve announced plans to create a commercial paper funding facility and its chairman signalled that the authorities stood ready to cut rates.
