Budget shoppers help lift Sports Direct

Sports Direct’s discounted sportswear is finding favour with cash-strapped consumers despite the high street gloom, with the retailer reporting UK sales ahead of expectations but margins eroded by sterling weakness.

The group, founded by Mike Ashley, said it was particularly pleased with the trading performance in its home market, which had benefited from “specific management focus”.
