Brown faces protectionism challenge

British banks have cut sharply lending to overseas borrowers, official figures show, highlighting the challenge facing Gordon Brown as he warns against a slide into financial protectionism.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos Friday, the prime minister insisted “international co-operation is absolutely necessary” to ensure money and bank lending flow to emerging markets.
