The professions: You must do something you really like

As the European economy slows, many parents are likely to advise their children to choose a profession because, as the old adage goes, people will always need doctors and lawyers. But is this still sound advice?

According to Professor Kate Purcell, at the Warwick Institute for Employment Research, the short answer is, yes: “Those who have studied professional subjects such as law and medicine are likely to end up in jobs that use those skills and will have a good steady income.” It is a good investment, she says, to study a professional subject. Moreover, as Mike Hill, chief executive of Graduate Prospects, the UK careers’ support service, says the professions are “relatively recession-proof”.
