Colombo loses partner over tsunami aid plan

Sri Lanka's ruling coalition yesterday lost the support of a vital ally when its Marxist nationalist partner quit the government in protest at plans to involve Tamil Tiger rebels in the distribution of tsunami relief.

The withdrawal of the People's Liberation Front (JVP) brings the government to the brink of collapse, leaving it weakened and dependent on the continuing support of opposition parties that back the proposed joint mechanism for aid distribution.
