The US Department of Justice said yesterday it had carried out its largest ever operation against a Mexican drugs cartel, in a swoop that involved 3,000 agents, more than 1,000 arrests and law enforcement actions in more than 19 states.

Washington said its move against the cartel, known as La Familia Michoacana, demonstrated ramped-up US efforts against the narcotics organisations south of the border.
