Swiss chemicals groups hit crossroads

The Rhine flows broad and slow at Basel, the Swiss city whose fortunes were based in chemicals. But Ciba and Clariant, the city’s leading speciality chemical groups, have entered decidedly choppy waters.

Last Friday, Clariant ditched its chief executive after barely two years in the job. At the same time, Ciba has come under mounting pressure from activist investors to disown its chairman and former chief executive.
