Big oil independents see contrasting fortunes

The contrasting fates of Britain’s leading independent oil and gas companies were brought into stark relief last week.

While Venture Production lost its battle to ward off a takeover by Centrica, the owner of British Gas, Cairn Energy celebrated the opening of one of the biggest fields found anywhere in the world in the past decade, and Tullow Oil’s exciting growth prospects kept investors eager for more news.
