Fears for Europe as bird flu edges across Russia

The bird flu virus has spread west to a sixth Russian region, increasing fears that it could be carried to Europe.

Russia's agriculture ministry said yesterday the virus had been found in a village in the Chelyabinsk region, on the eastern slopes of the Ural mountains, which separate Europe and Asia, but it did not say whether it was the H5N1 strain that can be fatal in humans.
