Skype writedown muffles eBay revival

Ebay on Wednesday disclosed fresh signs that efforts to revive the flagging growth of its core auction business were paying off, extending a rally that had already seen its shares bounce strongly in recent weeks.

However, a previously disclosed $1.39bn writedown of its investment in Skype left the US e-commerce company nursing a loss of $935m for its latest quarter, to the end of September.
