Housing market bubble 'set to spread'

The bubble in parts of the US housing market will spread as prices continue to rise, American Express predicted yesterday.

Values are racing away in the north-east, California and Hawaii, the hotspots in the 1980s housing boom. In some areas prices have doubled in the past five years, compared with an average 50 per cent increase for the US as a whole. There have also been gains in Nevada, Maryland, Florida and Virginia.
