Doubts emerge about Beijing’s succession plan

New questions have been raised about the succession process in the Chinese Communist party after Xi Jinping, the vice-president and President Hu Jintao’s heir apparent, was apparently denied an expected promotion to the commission that runs the country’s military.

Mr Xi’s appointment was widely predicted during last week’s annual meeting of the ruling party’s central committee, which ended on Friday evening.
