Making the moon landings sexy again

President Obama has disappointed scientists by failing to use the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 to promise a new programme of lunar landings. Many attribute his ambivalence to the immense cost of a space programme in a period of austerity. The problem, however, is not the money – it’s the viewing figures.
