Blair voices strong support for embattled UN chief

Tony Blair, British prime minister, on Thursday gave a strong personal endorsement to Kofi Annan, the embattled United Nations secretary-general who is facing demands for his resignation following allegations of corruption in the UN over the Iraq oil-for-food programme.

At a hastily organised event in London at which Mr Annan spoke about his plans for UN reform, Mr Blair threw his political weight - and influence with the US administration - behind the UN chief.
