China Mobile plans stake in Taiwan

China Mobile on Wednesday unveiled plans to take a 12 per cent stake in Taiwan mobile operator Far EasTone for $533m, the first Chinese investment in a listed Taiwan company.

The deal, a breakthrough in cross-Strait economic co-operation, still needs official approval from both governments. However, a joint statement issued this weekend by Chinese and Taiwanese negotiators that opened mainland Chinese investment into Taiwan in principle means the deal is more likely to go through.
