The Turkish parliament on Saturday approved a divisive and controversial change to the constitution that will ease some of the restrictions on the wearing of the Muslim headscarf on the campuses of state universities.
The vote – 403 out of parliament’s 550 MPs voted in favour of the proposal – was the second of two to ease the restrictions, which have been in place since 1982, although they have been rigorously enforced only since 1997. The first vote took place on Wednesday.
