Mortgage approvals slump

Mortgage approvals for home purchases in October matched the record low 32,000 seen in August, down 63 per cent from the year before, according to new figures from the Bank of England.

Overall, the Bank said net mortgage lending - new loans extended minus repayments of principal - rose by just £500m.
