A weaker US dollar and worsening housing market hit Wolseley, which on Monday said its North American trading profits were down 40 per cent in the five months to the end of December.

The shares, which have lost half their value in the past 12 months, tumbled in early London trading but later recovered some of their losses to close 3.7 per cent or 26½p lower at 689½p.
