The United Nations’ new Middle East peace envoy warned yesterday that the escalation of violence in Gaza threatened to precipitate a “rapid deterioration” in the situation and could unravel burgeoning hopes of re-invigorated peace talks.

“I am deeply troubled by the further escalation of fighting,” Michael Williams told the Financial Times in his first interview since his official appointment as special co-ordinator for the Middle East peace process.
