Chief says FSA faces one of toughest years

The threat to the UK economy will lead to one of the most difficult years that the Financial Services Authority has faced, warned Hector Sants at his first annual meeting of the industry watchdog as chief executive.

The need to sharpen supervision of banks and other financial institutions will lead to the FSA breaching its own budget this financial year, Mr Sants said, and will mean that companies face a “significant” rise in fees after 2009.
