Train operators call for electrified lines

There are big opportunities to improve train performance and cut pollution through a 10-year programme of small rail electrification projects, the organisation representing train operators will say on Monday.

The Association of Train Operating Companies (Atoc) believes it would cost only £50m a year – a fraction of the more than £5bn Network Rail, the rail infrastructure owner, spends annually – to carry out the 10-year programme.
