Labour has stiff task as gloom pervades

Gordon Brown risks a “catastrophic” general election defeat if Labour remains politically “paralysed”, a leading party figure will say on Monday in a warning that reflects the high stakes faced by the main party leaders in this autumn’s round of party conferences.

The warning in a speech by Jon Cruddas, the Labour MP seen as a potential candidate to succeed Mr Brown as party leader, is designed to galvanise the left.
